North Nashville is in the throes of rebirth, and while condominiums sprout, Germantown Café provides a deft culinary backdrop to the excitement. In a lucky space a few streets behind downtown, the windows offer an expansive and illuminated nighttime view of the Capitol building, contrasting nicely with the intimate setting within. The small but select menu doffs its hat to Dixie with the squash fritter and fried green tomato starters, then chef Jay Luther tilts the menu towards creative contemporary with the plum pork medallions and, seasonally, the tasso chicken breast stuffed with cheese. But for a simple pleasure and an illustration of true attention to the smallest detail, enjoy a salad with the house dressing. Be sure to aim a spoon at the French onion soup, a rich and buttery broth topped with a crispy layer of shiny Swiss. At brunch, regulars torture themselves over the decision to order the crab cakes Benedict with cayenne hollandaise or the spicy shrimp over pepperjack grits. The mostly California-based, value-oriented wine list is almost all available by the glass, and there are some large format offerings as well. |
