Dining room at Germantown Café, Nashville, TNIn a lucky space a few streets from downtown, this restaurant boasts an expansive and illuminated nighttime view of the Capitol building, contrasting nicely with the intimate setting within. The small but select menu doffs its hat to Dixie with fried green tomatoes and Gulf shrimp sautéed in Cajun butter, but tilts towards comfort-zone contemporary with the plum pork medallions and wine-braised lamb shank. For a simple pleasure and an illustration of true attention to the smallest detail, enjoy a salad with the eye-opening house dressing. Be sure to aim a spoon at the French onion soup, a rich and buttery broth capped with Swiss cheese. At brunch, try the crab cakes Benedict with cayenne hollandaise or the spicy shrimp over pepperjack grits. The mostly California-based, value-oriented wine list’s selections are almost all available by the glass, and there are some large format offerings as well.
