Filling a long-awaited niche in the downtown area, Gina’s Filipino Kape is a pioneer in bringing a taste of the Philippines to the mainstream. Housed in a former coffee shop on a nondescript side street, the interior is cramped and the décor simple, but diners don’t come here for the ambience. Rather, patrons flock for the satisfying food, friendly service and reasonable prices. The menu is somewhat limited, offering only a few standard dishes and a daily special. Our favorite is the garlic shrimp rice bowl, the meat plump and well-charred, the intense garlic butter soaked into every morsel. Another hit was the fork-tender pork adobo, slow-simmered in vinegar and garlic. Selections are served with the classic Filipino macaroni salad, ice cold and peppered with raisins, as well as lumpia, lightly fried and paired with a sweet and sour chili sauce. Gina's also offers breakfast, which features fried rice with egg and sausage, accompanied by banana ketchup. For a sweet ending to any meal, try the house-made Filipino egg pie or cassava cake.
