| For more than 50 years, the Grand Bakery was the place for donuts, coffee cakes and sugar cookies. Parts of the legacy---most significantly, in the affection the neighborhood feels for the place---lives on at the Grand Cafe. Folks who live nearby---residents all over the Twin Cities, really---know to come to this gracious, low-key charmer for an uncomplicated lunch (velvety house-cured gravlax with poached eggs and asparagus, gnocchi with wild mushrooms, addictive fruit cobblers). And they come for romantic dinners, too, when the dining room is lit by flickering candlelight and the menu features good ideas like a daily canapé tray, juicy roast chicken with sunchoke purée, tender short ribs seasoned with North African spices, or house-made pastas. Brunch is a pleasure, whether it's corned beef hash or thick slices of brioche french toast glazed with an orange-scented caramel sauce. |
