| Not much bigger than a bread box, this warm and lively pizzeria emulates the welcoming coziness of an Italian trattoria. Sponged walls hung with colorful art cast a golden glow over a room crowded with tables, chairs and noisy people. From 6 p.m. on, the place is jammed with locals who show up in jeans and shorts for a casual good time. They talk, they laugh, they drink Italian wines and they keep the decibel level just slightly below that of a rock concert. Meanwhile, the pizzaiolo in residence works quickly and fluidly, turning out beautiful thin-crusted pies, puffed up and bubbly from the wood-burning oven. Toppings include prosciutto, Gorgonzola, arugula and artichokes---the kind of gourmet stuff you won’t find at Domino’s. Sturdy, plate-sized calzones, oozing with mild, melting cheeses are wonderful too. Although the menu doesn’t offer full-blown Italian entrées, crostini, salads and a limited selection of appetizers and desserts seem to be enough to keep everyone happy. This is the kind of neighborhood restaurant every neighborhood needs. |
