The Grill at Hacienda del Sol Restaurant Review: With views of the valley and a quiet elegance, this resort dining room has long been a local favorite for special occasions. Yes, breakfast is served, and the choices are uptown versions of the usual items (for example, the Hacienda buffalo Benedict). But we prefer dinner, which brings a concise menu that honors a wide range of traditional foods while adding a modern flair. The grapefruit and avocado salad is tart and sweet with touches of candied lemon zest, crunchy jícama and fiery pepitas, all tossed in a caramel vinaigrette. Sweet corn soup holds flavors of Mexico with bits of avocado, poblano chiles and panella cheese. Entrées are just as surprising. Chicken and waffles, which seem more appropriate in a pub setting, are perfectly at home here. Chicken is cornmeal encrusted, the butter is laced with foie gras and the honey, for drizzling, is spicy with cumin. A grilled pork chop is kicked up a level or two with its accompaniments of cauliflower grits, spicy chard, bacon jam, caramelized apples and red-eye gravy. Desserts are created on a whim. Consider enjoying the Sunday brunch, too. The wine book is one of the most extensive and creative in Southern Arizona.
