A fine example of the gastropub concept: notable American food, topnotch cocktails and an unpretentious neighborhood-bar ambience.

Highland Kitchen has turned a generic, unassuming neighborhood bar space in the quiet, residential Spring Hill section of Somerville into a budget-minded gourmand's dining destination. Chef Mark Romano plates an eclectic mix of casual American bar food, regional New England specialties, and oversize sandwiches for a youthful crowd of hipsters and neighborhood folks. Local ingredients are showcased in dishes like smoked bluefish cakes, Rhode Island-style fried calamari with pepper rings, and unusually good fish ā€˜n’ chips. Generously stacked sandwiches like the fried oyster po' boy and Carolina-style barbecue pulled pork, and bar snacks like deviled eggs and marinated olives, round out a very reasonably priced menu. Sunday brunch means down-home specialties like chicken liver omelets. Highland Kitchen puts extra care into a well crafted cocktail list that leans toward vintage concoctions, like Sazeracs and Brandy Flips. There's also a row of artisanal brews on tap that will please even the pickiest beer connoisseur. Friendly service and a jukebox full of terrific American tracks complement the noisy atmosphere.
