After finding success in Santa Monica, Hostaria del Piccolo has expanded with this Venice location in The Frank multi-use building, not far from sister restaurant Piccolo Ristorante. This Hostaria del Piccolo has a modern look similar to the original, with lots of glass and cement that have the unfortunate effect of amplifying sound in the bustling dining room. On the wall by the bar is a giant display of four flat-screen TVs showing nostalgic, black-and-white Italian movies. Those with special dietary needs will find the menu easy to navigate, with special symbols noting what dishes are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy free and egg free. The back of the menu also boasts about the high-quality imported products the kitchen uses, such as Grom gelato and Montasio cheese. Among the hit dishes, you’ll find the striking Pizza Nero. The dough is infused with squid ink, providing a dark background against toppings of mozzarella, seared ahi tuna and green onions. Other options include gluten-free penne with cream of porcini and truffle oil; tagliatelle with braised beef Bolognese; and slow roasted pork belly and loin (porchetta). For dessert, indulge in the flourless chocolate cake, vanilla creampuffs or pear carpaccio with chocolate crème brûlée. There is a light menu of beer and wine, plus a full bar. Service is attentive.
