In an unprecedented coup, Sydney’s famous crescent-shaped beach, Bondi, is bracketed by two premier eateries. What’s more they share a chef and the same trio of owners. Icebergs, on the southern end, overlooks the rock pool with golden Bondi and the ocean stretched out in front of it. Those that can tear their eyes away from this panorama will notice that the restaurant’s interior has been kept intentionally simple, the décor tinted blue and green and cream to match the waves and sand. It's ultra sleek, with its modern and minimalist lines. The food is just as beguiling as the design, reflected in chef Robert Marchetti’s menu: oysters aplenty, carpaccio of local fish, crab with soft polenta and chili, wild scallops, and whatever whole fish is freshest and best that day at the market. Non-“fishophiles” need not despair as a first-rate selection of various cuts of beef is available from the grill, such as ox filet with bone marrow roasted with garlic, lemon, mint and butter. For a bit of table-drama do order the cartoccio stingray. It’s absolutely worth seeing everyone’s faces as the waiter opens the paper bag in which it has been cooked and the fragrant steam rises. Soft Italian cheeses, cassata, cannoli and other true Italian desserts bring a meal here to its most appropriate conclusion. That’s unless you choose another bottle from the list of local and international wines.
