 Il Capriccio Ristorante e Bar Restaurant Review: Il Capriccio helped put blue-collar Waltham on the culinary map---and it continues to draw city-slickers to the 'burbs. Not that you can tell by looking---the subdued décor is downright staid by city-slicker standards. But the mostly older, well-heeled patrons don't mind. They're not here for a buzzing scene, but for chef-owner Rich Barron's mostly Northern Italian fare. As a rule, the menu’s Tuscan simplicity contrasts with the heavy decadence of the Italian Alps---consider pan-roasted trout with smoked prosciutto and spätzle---but influences from as far away as Sardinia and Sicily also pop up, as in an extra-hearty dish of grilled lamb with cannellini and caponata. While the rich mushroom soufflé is a year-round must, the seasonal treat to beat is an appetizer of honey-drizzled, ricotta-stuffed zucchini blossoms (Barron was, as far as we know, one of the first chefs to introduce fiori di zucca to Bostonians). Meanwhile, co-owner and sommelier Jeannie Rogers guides you through the notable Italian wine list. |
