Despite a spectacular setting at the point where the Miami River meets Biscayne Bay, several trendy upscale restaurants in the same building have failed fast. This Italian hotspot has been a hit from day one because though prices are royal, patrons are made to feel like kings. The proprietors are the original owners of NYC's Il Mulino and follow the same formula of lavishing freebie food. Upon seating, diners receive a large wedge of Parmigiano-Reggiano, cut from a huge wheel, garnished with sweet, thick balsamico; tomato bruschetta and garlicky rustic bread; then, fried zucchini slivers. At meal's end, there's a complimentary limoncello digestif. If you've room for non-free food, the place excels in cream sauces; try the hefty veal chop stuffed with prosciutto, cheese and foie gras pâté, with mushroom cream sauce. Porcini-stuffed ravioli with Champagne cream sauce and black truffles is a recommended special. Desserts are pedestrian---molten chocolate cake, tiramisu, etc. But the wine list is impressive in both size and breadth, offering French as well as Italian selections.
