Imperial Lamian, Chicago, IL

Imperial Lamian Restaurant Review

: The loud thwack of fresh lamian noodles being pulled and kneaded reverberates throughout the dining room at this sophisticated Chinese restaurant, while seats along the open kitchen provide the best view of the action. This is Indonesia-based Imperial Group’s first restaurant in the U.S., and the most beautiful Chinese place in town, with rich chocolate browns accented by mosaic tiles and Chinese medicine boxes. Xiao long bao are delicately folded, the thin pliable skins filled with rich broth. Skip the truffle flavor, made with truffle oil, in favor of the spicy Szechuan or classic Shanghai varieties. The large menu includes dim sum, barbecue, fried rice and wok-fried vegetables, meats and seafood, requiring several large group visits to find your favorites. Soft-shell crab is overly breaded and salted, but you won’t go wrong with any of the signature lamian. Order a side of fresh gailan, Chinese broccoli, to accompany the fatty pork belly variety, and try the salted egg yolk custard liu sha bao for dessert --- a sweet and salty molten center is hidden within fluffy white buns.
