Jekyll Island Club Hotel Grand Dining Room Restaurant Review

: Housing one of the most romantic dining rooms in the state, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is a gem of a property with a history that allows it to preserve a fair measure of dated charm. Arriving in mid-2014, chef Dale Ford has begun updating the menu and the plate presentation. Local and regional sources, ingredients and traditions remain important, however. Produce comes from nearby Sapelo Farms and Baker Farms, while meats and the Poulet Rouge are from North Carolina's Joyce Farms. But as changes progress, look for such dishes as Coca-Cola-braised pork belly topped with grilled scallop and surrounded by butternut squash purée and microgreens. The fish preparation is decided nightly; we enjoyed the wild-caught catfish filets, just lightly coated and fried and served on a lemon aïoli. The accompanying beets were as sweet as candy. A salad of grilled cauliflower and asparagus had a bit too much dressing for our taste, but was elevated by its flavors and crunchy texture. Desserts are not yet updated; quite ordinary Key lime pie is probably the best among them for now. The wine list, like the food, is being overhauled, but does offer well-priced selections and some fairly serious special choices.
