Live Mexican music and substantial margaritas make the weekends rowdy at this small but fun café near the ocean in Ventura. For many locals Sunday brunch here is a tradition, time to mix it up with the tourists who weekend at one of Southern California’s last ungentrified beach strips. The traditional Mexican food can be heavy because it relies on cheese, beans, pork and beef, but there are quite a few vegetarian specials. The soups are a highlight---albondigas, shrimp, tortilla, garlic and even clam chowder---but the ambience is the main attraction. Grab a table on the patio and pull up a margarita. During the month of December, they make tamales en masse for taking home to holiday celebrations.
