The site of a former late-night diner has been transformed into a real grown-up bar in the gay neighborhood of San Francisco. But you don’t have to be gay to enjoy the food at JohnFrank, just hungry. The menu hits all the right notes, especially since acclaimed chef Lance Velasquez has become a partner and the executive chef. Be sure to try the steamed mussels with chorizo, scallions and polenta. But our very favorite appetizer is the bread salad, with lemon cukes, spicy arugula and juicy tomatoes moistening the cubes of bread. The country pan-roasted chicken comes with savory fried cream and a thyme jus. The molasses-glazed pork chop, served with spaetzle and a peach-cherry chutney, is the best in the city. The wine list is well chosen and well priced. The excellent waiters are friendly and efficient.
