| The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Kali’s Mezze, which adjoins its parent, Kali’s Court, has inherited its crowd-charming ways, its coolly elegant décor, its Mediterranean focus, and its wizardly way with seafood. But Mezze is Kali’s in a more casual mode: all of its offerings are served in appetizer-size portions designed for mixing, sharing and, of course, experimenting. The menu is divided into vegetable, seafood, and meat-poultry mezze. Order a few to begin with; if you’re as easily tempted as we are, you probably won’t stop there. Anything seafood is a best bet --- we recommend the tuna carpaccio, topped with red onions and shaved Parmesan --- but vegetarians are well served with more than two dozen items, and the baby lamb chops are standouts. (Multi-course tasting menus, both vegetarian and non, are available for $35.) You can climb the curving ocean liner-style staircase to a more intimate upstairs dining room, but we like the first floor bar area for people-watching. Be aware that on popular dining-out nights, you may have to wait to be seated, even with a reservation. |
