| A restaurant with a split personality---half the space belongs to Penang, the DC-based Malaysian eatery---Karma essentially offers an Indian menu. The food here is a cut above the average, with full, honest Indian flavors devoid of any Western shortcuts. But since Malaysian food is also on offer, take the opportunity to do some mix and match. Start with such delicacies as the Malaysian roti canai, a small portion of chicken curry served with a roti (bread), or the roti telur, a pancake stuffed with egg and onions and served with curry. For something a little spicier, try the appetizer chicken 65 made with chilies and curry leaves. But it’s the Indian kitchen here that shines: don’t skip the lamb vindaloo if you relish heat, and the chicken makhani stars a rich, creamy tomato curry. Other best bets: the dal, any of the breads, and the chilly chicken, another Malaysian specialty geared for those who like plenty of heat. Don’t skip the Indian desserts: the gulab jamun, or flour dumplings, are soaked in sweetened rose water. |
