THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Khyber Pass Restaurant Review:

Set in the heart of Hillcrest, Khyber Pass offers generous portions of authentic Afghan cuisine to an eclectic clientele. The photos of Steve McCurry (of National Geographic fame) line this two-tiered restaurant; the eyes of soulful children look upon diners who savor the aromas and tastes from half-way around the world. The food, including a mélange of soups, salads, kebabs and curries, is an education in flavors. We like to start with the ashawa (a hearty bean soup contrasted with tangy yogurt) and the vegetarian combination platter filled with an assortment of dumplings and dips. The kebabs at Khyber Pass are succulent---we especially like the spicy lamb with fragrant basmati rice. Eggplant dishes (usually a favorite of ours) can be hit-or-miss, sometimes silky, other times greasy. Don't miss the cardamom tea (good for the digestion) and the traditional ferni (pudding) topped with crushed pistachios.
