Nino and Melissa Zizzo both come from prominent Italian restaurant families. This this highly likeable restaurant, located a block from the beach in the wealthy La Jolla Shores district, is an offspring of their. Guests, who dine in one of the small, low-key rooms or at shady sidewalk tables, enjoy some of the better service in town. As you might expect from the restaurant’s name, bruschetta looms large on the menu, but we eschew these tasty topped breads and ask Nino to compose an antipasto plate of grilled, marinated vegetables, cold cuts, cheeses and his own caponata, a cold eggplant salad. For follow-ups, the kitchen offers good pastas and veal dishes, as well as pizzas that are better than most but seem a bit casual for this setting. Osso bucco appears on the weekends, and so do we when we’re in the mood for a large portion of tender veal shank over a fragrant saffron risotto.
