| Not just Penn students partake of the killer margaritas and spicy guacamole at this contemporary Mexican spot. The stylish interior features interesting artwork and soft lighting, but it’s the menu that gets your attention. Try nibbles such as pre-Columbian pumpkin seed dip, a trio of salsas (fresh tomato, tomatillo and Mexican hummus), or the aforementioned guacamole, which comes in its own lava molcajete. Tortillas are made in house, often at a station in the back. Corn sopas make an interesting appetizer---one filled with tomatillo chicken and sour cream, the other with black beans, cheese and mushrooms---as do pork dumplings in a hot orange-ancho chile broth. Entrées include camarones de infierno---sautéed head and tail of shrimp in a fiery tomato chile butter sauce, and a very tasty mole, fragrant with simmered spices, dried chilies and Mexican chocolate. Cool your palate with flan or ice cream afterwards. |
