 Le Chardonnay feels a bit like a rustic wine cellar, with low lighting and wooden décor reminiscent of aging barrels. The crowd on weekend nights assembles young couples, relaxed business executives sans the stuffy dress coats, and theatre and movie lovers headed to nearby venues. Candles on tables provide just enough illumination to read the menu and make everyone look good. Food ranges from filet mignon stuffed with Stilton to a large selection of wood-fired pizzas that qualify as the “designer,” gourmet style. Dine lightly on tapas, such as crab meat-stuffed, bacon-wrapped shrimp and sliders topped with smoked Gouda. Main attractions among desserts are Key lime pie and crème brûlée. Le Chardonnay boasts one of the most impressive wine lists in Midtown, with more than 100 choices (around 40 are offered by the glass). Domestic wines predominate, but other wine-growing regions are represented as well.
