 For many years Le Papillon was the top destination and special occasion restaurant in the Santa Clara Valley. While the dining scene has picked up since Le Papillon opened in 1977 with the advent of the Silicon Valley (which literally sprouted up around it) this well-established French restaurant seats guests in elegantly upholstered chairs as the cozy dining room flickers with candles on white tablecloths. The waiters are highly professional and the food is consistently extravagant. Chef Scott Cooper’s extensive à la carte and changing tasting menus feature inventive dishes like pan-seared foie gras with tomato molasses and caramelized avocado; Dungeness crab soufflé with lemon, saffron and caviar; noisettes of red deer with Cabernet-truffle reduction and a parsnip tart; and sautéed Arctic char with ruby grapefruit and fennel-artichoke-butternut squash lasagna. The five-course prix-fixe dinner is a good deal, especially when paired with the suggested accompanying wines.
