| To dine at Liberty House is to understand its tag line A View With a Room. There's the sparkling lights of Manhattan, tantalizingly close; the Statue of Liberty; the cobblestone roads and waterfront walks of Liberty State Park and marina. The interior is a stylish match with soothing earth tones rendered in natural stone, rich woods and rustic metals. A sprawling, seven-sided bar---with a raw bar and sushi as well as wine and liquor---dominates the main dining room, and French doors lead to a patio with tables, chairs and gleaming brass telescopes. The menu is a little less spectacular, crafted more for the destination diner than the epicure, but there is much to savor here. Chef Philip Campanella offers familiar American ingredients with aromatic flavors of many countries. Witness: Crispy calamari with Thai chili sauce and green olive sauce; steamed mussels in a broth made of white wine, garlic, cilantro, lime and chili oil. The pan-seared snapper is a surprise and delight, served with mussels, cockles and new potatoes in a saffron-ginger broth. The crowd is egalitarian with seamen in heavy-weather gear and watch caps ofttimes standing next to well-heeled young professionals at the bar. The service at Liberty House is fine, attentive yet unobtrusive. The wine list is interesting and well chosen with plenty of options in the $20s. |
