Dining room at Livingston Restaurant + Bar, Atlanta, GAEarly twentieth-century Atlanta Mayor Livingston Mims, who lived in a house built on this corner in 1879, was renowned for his hospitality and his love of food and wine. In his honor, his first name now graces this Atlanta restaurant, and his last name its casual coffee and pastry bar, Café Mims. Livingston expresses the flair its founding chef, Gary Mennie, developed during his stints at Canoe and the now-closed Taurus. Mennie has departed the restaurant, and his executive sous chef, Zeb Stevenson, now wears the top toque. Stevenson’s sense of cooking is focused on purity of flavor and authenticity of primary materials, much of which come from local sources. He makes many special items in-house, such as "pastrami" sausage with barrel-aged pickled cabbage and Russian dressing. Other appetizers include kale and watermelon radish salad with chickpea crêpes, pecorino, and black truffle vinaigrette, and roasted local beets with house-made fromage blanc, mint and Champagne vinaigrette. Inventive dishes such as these never lose their sense of balance, however. For mains, try the seared jumbo scallops with curried cauliflower gratin and pear and caper relish, or the pecan-smoked duck breast with rutabaga, pecans, toasted wheat and malt syrup. Make sure to save room for unique desserts like the apple stack cake with fried waffles and sorghum swirl ice cream.
