: It takes some gumption to open a sustainable seafood restaurant and café on the corner of Bryant and 23rd Streets. Though there's a coffee shop, Mexican joint and bar nearby, this location is deep in the Mission, miles (or so it seems) from busy Valencia, Mission and 24th Streets. And that's what makes it so sweet. Local's Corner feels effortlessly authentic, as if its vintage papered walls and sunny tables have been serving the neighborhood forever. The food, however, is far from the usual. Daytime fare is "brunch-ish": quiche, baked eggs and Belgian waffles, all accented by an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. But when the sun falls things get seafood-centric. A half dozen varieties of oysters are available on the half shell; we like to start with the tiny Miyagi from nearby Tomales Bay. From there, the menu is divided into Sea (abalone, hen of the woods mushrooms, fava beans, wild onion blossoms), Land (seasonal terrines) and Larder (bread and pork butter). The wine list is heavy on the white and pink variety, but for those committed to pairing red wine and fish, the light and fruity reds on the menu will do the trick. Dessert comes from nearby Knead Pâtisserie --- think small, well balanced bites that walk the line between savory and sweet. Local's Corner is fresh, a little experimental and a complete delight. Kind of like a "staycation."
