| Tucked behind the art galleries of Cedros Avenue, Lockwood Table Café is a fine spot for a gourmet breakfast or easy lunch when you need a break from shopping in the trendy design district. Owner Alicia Douglas has created a local-friendly spot with a name that pays homage to the area, as Solana Beach was originally called Lockwood Mesa. Breakfast calls for steel-cut oatmeal or brown rice with cinnamon, nuts and dried fruit. On Friday through Sunday, don't miss the baked egg soufflés that feature turkey and Gruyère or spinach, tomato and feta. Lunch favors grilled sandwiches like "the lockwood"---Black Forest ham with melted gooey Brie and sweet pear on pumpernickel---or "the nardo"---fresh tomato, bacon and spinach on country French bread. For something lighter, we suggest the salad with baby arugula dotted with beets and topped with Parmesan. Many sweets are gluten-free, like cupcakes, cookies and tarts with organic fruit. Tea drinkers will enjoy the variety of whole leafs. Picnic baskets and take-out dinners are available too. |
