Lum-Ka-Naad Restaurant Review

: Alex Sonbalee and his wife, Ooi, built on their Northridge success with a branch of Lum-Ka-Naad in Encino. The space features a burgundy awning with yellow lettering, an outdoor patio and a dining room with a Buddha statue mural and wood-barrel chandeliers. The sprawling menu, with nearly 200 items in total, contains dishes from both Northern and Southern Thailand. Kua gling kra dook moo lavishes bone-in baby-back pork ribs with an aromatic curry paste of galangal, makrut lime leaves, turmeric root and shrimp paste. Marinated Mekong River fish grills in a banana leaf with oyster mushroom, egg, basil, makrut lime leaves and curry paste, yielding pla pling. Som tum is particularly fierce at Lum-Ka-Naad, with crunchy julienne papaya paired with ingredients like pickled fish or salted crab. Larb is another strength, with minced pork, chicken or beef pan-fried with mint, rau ram and Northern Thai spices. Umami is also on the rise with yum jing jang, a salad of crunchy anchovies tossed with chilies, lime juice, mint, mango, scallions and shallots.
