Dining room at Lumiere, West Newton, MA

Lumiere Restaurant Review

: Chef Michael Leviton is the proprietor of this French go-to bistro located right across from the West Newton Cinema. The space is refined yet striking in off-whites, thanks to star designer Sandra Fairbank. The menu is likewise cool and thoughtful and Leviton's sense of restraint crystal-clear in dishes like Maryland soft shell crab served with lime curry rémoulade and peppered peanuts, and asparagus soup with lemon crème fraîche. For main dishes, pair a Gin & Jazz cocktail with halibut with braised artichokes and orange-black pepper aïoli, or a glass of Cabernet with the slow-roasted Niman Ranch pork rib-eye. Another focus is on Mangalitsa pig, a Hungarian wooly animal raised for its fat and revered for its taste. Mangalitsa sausages, bacon, Canadian bacon, lardo, guanciale and ham have made cameos on the menu. Don’t miss the ever-changing cheese platter for dessert. And though the food is costly, a smart selection of wines by the glass has yet to hit the price-heights scaled by Lumière's downtown counterparts.
