Macello Restaurant Review:

Even if you don't know exactly where to find Puglia on a map --- for the record, it’s located in the southeastern, “boot heel” region of Italy --- you’ll still find the food at Macello enjoyable. Chef-owner Giovanni DeNigris is on a mission to educate Chicagoans on the rustic, earthy food of his birthplace, and it appears to be working. Housed in a former 1920s slaughterhouse (“macello” means butcher shop in Italian), this Warehouse District restaurant has thick wood beams, skylights, frescoed walls and colorful hand-painted fiberglass orbs that hang from the ceiling. Start with a thin-crust pizza and follow with house-made sausages. Or opt for pasta --- the trofiette with shrimp is a winner---or fish cooked in the wood-burning oven. Go for the full Italian experience and pair your tiramisu with a glass of limoncello.
