MacTarnahan’s Taproom Restaurant Review: Portland doesn't lack for brewpubs, but MacTarnahans is one of the standouts. Set in a little-traveled corner of the Northwest industrial area, it's off the beaten path, but the distinctive smell of brewing hops, bright lights, and occasional live music may draw you in. The comfortable patio is relaxing on warm days, and the Pacific Northwest contemporary style fireplace-lit rooms are welcoming when temperatures drop. With 12 distinctive brews on tap, this is first and foremost a place for beer tasting, making the sampler tray with five small tastes a popular choice. The menu hews to traditional brewpub fare, but it's well prepared, with many plates featuring the apple wood-fired oven and craft beer. Lighter eaters can go for the chicken salad with greens, pasta, feta cheese, hazelnuts, peppers, and an ale vinaigrette, or perhaps consider the fish tacos, too. Heartier appetites might enjoy the Scottish pie made with pork chili, garlic mashed potatoes, cheese and onions. There's a credible fish ‘n’ chips, and we also recommend the rotisserie-smoked beer can chicken roasted with Hefeweizen. It's a friendly place for families, with high chairs, crayons, draft root beer and plenty of satisfying food.
