Main Street Bakery & Cafe Restaurant Review: On winter mornings, the windows of the Victorian-era home of Main Street Bakery Cafe steam up from all the hot, fresh bread and pastry baking, coffee brewing and tea and chai steeping. In summer, windows are thrown open to let it in the clean mountain air, and tables on the shaded patio are coveted. With continuous service from breakfast to closing, the place is rarely empty or quiet. Breakfast blends into lunch, and lunch melds seamlessly into dinner---on evenings, that is, when the owner feels like putting in the extra hours. In addition to such launch-the-day faves as fresh muffins, rolls, pastries and croissants, we like the hearty egg dishes, breakfast quiches, pancakes and French toast, not to mention excellent house-made granola and oatmeal. Lunch tends to the light side, with house-made soups, sandwiches and salads---all the better to leave room for a slice of freshly baked pie or cake, or maybe a rich brownie or cookie, with or without ice cream. When dinner is offered, expect such old-fashioned favorites as New England pot roast, chicken pot pie, stew, pasta and seafood. Wine and beer are also available. |
