You call them heroes; others call them subs or grinders. Under any name, these torpedo-size monsters, overstuffed with hearty Italian cold cuts, are some of New York's best sandwiches. The roster of hot Italian dishes that fills out the menu is pretty lackluster, but the aroma of imported cheeses, fresh bread and olives is intoxicating. Sandwiches range from individual heroes with salami, mozzarella and roasted peppers to order-in-advance specialties such as the six-foot champion for up to 40 hungry people. Will you choose the meatball Parmigiana or the salami, provolone and peppers? Pastas and salads are available, too.
