Mantra started off with a bang that fizzled quickly. But it didn't burn out entirely; after all, it was the look of the place that caused much of the initial hoopla, and that remains stunning. The converted bank space in Downtown Crossing boasts a marble bar, a plush lounge, a gleaming see-and-be-seen layout and, above all, a soaring, much-ballyhooed hookah den. Hence, though the kitchen lost its focus, moving in a more eclectic direction after acclaimed chef Thomas John's departure, the bar thrived. But now, thanks to the current chef---Indian transplant Anupam Joglekar---the fusion palace is aiming to earn anew the name it initially purchased for itself on the credit of hype. Indeed, the most streamlined dishes are the most appealing, such as a trio of chilled fruit soups or steamed barramundi in lemon grass beurre blanc. A lunch buffet and a late-night tasting menu, meanwhile, now forego the fusion to offer more straightforward, but no less elegant, Indian fare.
