THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mantra Restaurant Review:
Mantra started off with a bang that fizzled quickly. But it didn't burn out entirely; after all, it was the look of the place that caused much of the initial hoopla, and that remains striking. The converted bank space in Downtown Crossing boasts a marble bar, a plush lounge, a gleaming see-and-be-seen layout and, above all, a soaring, much-ballyhooed hookah den. The most streamlined dishes are the most appealing, such as a trio of chilled fruit soups or steamed barramundi in lemon grass beurre blanc. A lunch buffet and a late-night tasting menu, meanwhile, now offer more straightforward, but no less elegant, Indian fare.
