Mariposa Restaurant Review

: You'd be forgiven for forgetting that you're in the middle of Hawaii's largest shopping mall when you enter the airy, plantation-style dining room of Mariposa on the third floor of Ala Moana's Neiman Marcus. Executive chef Marc Anthony Freiberg refreshes the menu seasonally with regionally inspired dishes that make the most of the best local ingredients, particularly seafood items such as a composed salad with seared ahi and kampachi tossed with a toasted nori vinaigrette or the Mariposa poke with Alaskan king salmon, hamachi and ahi over brown rice, served garnished with a fresh rose. Lighter and gluten-free options are clearly marked throughout the menu, but if you want to indulge, select from savory pastas, the Mariposa burger with basil-tarragon aïoli and a slice of cheddar, or the signature lobster club sandwich. Service is always professional and you will never be rushed from the table, so linger over a sunset view of Ala Moana Beach Park from the outdoor lanai or a long lunch with a cocktail or two.

Wonderful evening at Mariposa!

Last night, we experienced a spectacular evening at the Mariposa restaurant at Neiman-Marcus! The panoramic view overlooking Ala Moana Park and stretching from Diamond Head to the mountains rising from the Ewa plains, the gentle breeze of a balmy summer evening, and the dining experience provided the perfect ingredients needed for our night to celebrate! Each dish was memorable! We started with the Kamuela tomato salad, an exquisite, more-than-generous combination of red, yellow, and burgundy tomatoes that pleased both the palate and the eye! The sweet tasting monkey bread with strawberry butter was the perfect complement. The barbeque shrimp appetizer was prepared to perfection, a delightful combination of a trio of shrimp with an avocado treasure tucked in a tasty sauce. For dinner, I had the fork tender Red Wine Braised Short Ribs on Parmesan Polenta. Also surrounded by petite "sauteed hariots," this beautifully presented, large cut of meat topped with gremolota, was absolutely delicious! My companion was pleased with his choice of King Crab Cioppino. This dish, full of various gifts from the sea, was a bit on the spicy side, which gave it an interesting kick! We ended the evening with Creamsicle Cheesecake and a fresh fruit pudding cake...once again not only gorgeous but also generous and delicious! With a trio of musicians playing in the background and attentive, knowledgeable waithelp making sure our needs were met, our leisurely evening in beautiful Hawai`i was absolutely perfect!
A dinner experience not worth repeating

With a tranquil setting, attentive service, and a somewhat limited menu, I was surprised to be served an entree that was hardly palatable -- advertised as "tip sirloin with pasta," there were about five mostly non-chewable bites of meat. And I mean non-chewable. The pasta was wide strips that stuck together in various stages of doneness. I could not get out of there quickly enough -- $104 including tip for two of us, which is not my point. Don't go unless you are willing to send back whole plates of food. I wish I had asked to see the manager. I don't think he could have chewed the meat . . .
