THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mark & Orlando's Restaurant Review:
This charming Dupont Circle destination fills a void, offering genteel dishes served with panache from a chef who really cares about flavors and freshness. Settle down for lunch in this arty two-story setting, and start with the goat cheese and grits cake on a bed of shaved and wilted fennel moistened with a tart vinaigrette, a roasted tomato soup, a smoked fish plate, or a roasted beet salad with lamb’s lettuce. Luncheon entrées include a crayfish salad with sweet onions, lobster potpie and a lamb leg steak with a side of caramelized Brussels sprouts in a sherry vinegar sauce (a pleasant counterpoint to the gamey lamb). Dinner mains run to a pork chop stuffed with pancetta, apple and blue cheese and grilled marlin with English pea-mint mash. Desserts are just as nontraditional in their execution, with the prize winner being the exceptional fruit tart, a composition of baked berries layering a custardy filling in a tender crust. The more casual menu served upstairs in the TV and lounge area consists mainly of sandwiches and one or two more important entrées. For such a small restaurant, there’s a comprehensive if limited wine list.
