 Market Restaurant Review: In wine country, there’s often pretense in selecting a restaurant---expectations for elevated cuisine to match the wine, celebrity chefs and scenery. The idea of American food doesn’t instinctively fit the bill. But take stock in Market, which celebrates American classics in a stone-walled 1890s building on St. Helena’s main corridor. It’s all about comfort, and is the kind of restaurant you’d want to go to weekly for its surprisingly reasonable prices, fun neighborhood feel, attentive service and especially for the food. The name reflects a desire for morning marketplace freshness and quality ingredients. Thus, fried calamari, fennel and green beans razzle-dazzle, as do ling cod battered in Champagne with house-made tartar, and hanger steak with fingerlings, wild mushrooms and deep port reduction. From the raw bar’s hamachi tostaditas or a hulky burger with “very adult” mac ‘n’ cheese with Hobb’s bacon, to a more refined halibut with morels and favas, the cuisine hits the mark. Absolutely finish with dreamy butterscotch pudding or DIY s’mores. Categories on the savvy wine list read like the classifieds: “full bodied, rich and round” and “low grip, high pleasure.” |
