Serving contemporary Tex-Mex cuisine in a setting more lounge-like than restaurant, The Matador is part of a locally-owned group with a 21-years-of-age-and-older entry requirement. Located in a red-brick building with high ceilings, exposed metal beams, and antique light fixtures, the dark bar area with a topnotch tequila selection welcomes those seeking an after-work drink. For dining, choose among reliable Mexican standards as well as more inventive dishes prepared with high-quality ingredients and peppery spices. Try a bowl of chunky chili or be adventuresome and order zesty bacon-wrapped jalapeños stuffed with goat cheese. Although mahi mahi or habanero prawns are on the menu, we usually head straight for the meat. The carne asada is first-rate, moist, and paired with sautéed corn and leeks, as well as garlic mashers. We also suggest the carnitas, a dish of pork chunks served in a sauce hinting of cinnamon and orange, or the succulent baby-back ribs. Desserts include a molten chocolate cake paired with vanilla bean ice cream and a rum-caramel sauce.
