Who knew such a cavernous space existed in San Francisco's Mission District? Medjool is at once a café with indoor and outdoor seating, and a two level restaurant, and a bar and lounge complete with live DJs. The space is done up in jewel tones from burnt ochre to deep purple. The café, open from morning to night, offers pastries, espresso drinks and omelets alongside salads and panini sandwiches. At night, after a parade of happy hour specials, the lounge, with pillow-laden couches, opens into the restaurant. Mediterranean small plates are featured to best satisfy both the cozy bar tables and the more formal dining room. An order of fries is studded with parsley and preserved lemon. Fried calamari is dusted with earthy sumac powder. White fish is crusted in Moroccan chermoula, the hanger steak is rubbed with harissa before hitting the grill, and the chicken arrives with an almond and pomegranate sauce.
