Melanthios Restaurant Review: This Lakeview spot has the look and feel of a real Greek restaurant, with its white-washed walls, dark wood floors and knickknacks tucked in the open alcoves. Then there’s the open fire pit. Stop by on the weekends when whole lambs and pigs get roasted --- the scent permeates the entire one-room dining room with a wonderful, smoky aroma. If you’re looking for an alternative to the trek to Greektown, Melanthios is worthy of a visit, although be warned not every dish is a winner. Warm house-made bread served with earthy olive oil starts the meal on the right foot. Likewise for the char-grilled octopus and grilled portobello mushroom with Greek fries. The generously portioned gyros, while flavorful, have a strange texture to them, and the side dish of Greek-style green beans arrives mushy. Somewhat redeeming the offense, Greek coffee is strong and the baklava flaky. Added bonus: friendly, earnest service helps make up for flaws.
