Bangkok West Thai Restaurant Review:
A minimalist, stark white dining room sets the right ambience for enjoying creative Thai dishes near downtown Santa Monica. Curtains and a few pieces of Thai art adorn the walls, leaving diners to focus their attention on the food. Starters include sliced tuna in a spicy larb preparation of lime juice, onion, ground chile and rice powder; plenty of grilled and skewered proteins; and refreshing salads like spinach and duck with mushrooms and carrots. Traditional noodle dishes such as pad thai and rad-na are executed alongside more interpretive fare such as a seafood pasta of rice noodles with shrimp and fish in a thick peanut sauce. For entrées, there are several curries in addition to a lightly battered filet of sole served in a sweet-and-sour sauce, spicy scallops, and grilled garlic beef ribs. House specialties feature filet mignon a la Panang and crisp whole catfish. Desserts include banana and honey filled egg rolls with Thai ice cream, and sticky rice with sweet coconut sauce and mango. A surprisingly long wine list offers several spice-friendly options to pair with dinner.
