Cambridge, 1. Restaurant Review:

Essentially a casual pizza parlor, Cambridge, 1. manages to seem like so much more. Chalk part of its allure up to a room where exposed brick walls, concrete floors, recessed booths and woody minimalism mingle to dramatic modern effect. By day, the customers keep their eyes on the ballgame; by night, crowds dressed to kill --- or at least to dance --- keep each other in their sights. The flexible vibe comes courtesy of the savvy owners of Tory Row, Miracle of Science, and other local favorites. The rest of the credit goes to pies with pizzazz. The crust is thin and yeasty, in the designer vein, yet also chewy, like that found at some corner joint in New Haven. The range of toppings and combinations, from lobster with corn, scallion, cilantro, jalapeño and Parmesan, to Italian sausage combined with ricotta, tomato and Fontina, is limited in scope but not in appeal. Salads reveal a local sensibility; try the grilled chicken on romaine with croutons and balsamic vinaigrette. For heartier fare, order the gnocchi with sweet Italian sausage. There's just one dessert: a bowl of Toscanini's tiramisu ice cream.
