Doumar's Cones & Barbecue Restaurant Review:

Open since 1934, this is the country's oldest drive-in and a national landmark. Nostalgia buffs will be drawn to the orange awning outside and orange vinyl stools and booths inside (which is where you’ll need to be if you want a bottled beer). But you might not want to exit your ride to get the full experience: some of the carhops have been here for more than 40 years. Like the regular customers, undoubtedly they are loyal to the North Carolina-style pork barbecue with minced slaw; Taylor pork roll with lettuce, tomato and mayo; Egg-O-Doumar (fried ham and egg with cheese on a roll); shakes, floats and “orangeaide” with fresh fruit. Be sure to top off your meal with one of the ice cream cones or a sundae like the beloved Ringo made with crushed waffle cones and topped with hot fudge. Some credit founder Abe Doumar with creating the first ice cream cone in 1904. Regardless of parentage, the cone machine he used over a century ago at Coney Island is on display. Open until 12:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
