Gyu-Kaku Restaurant Review:

Not your family backyard barbecue, Gyu-Kaku's yakiniku concept provides a chance to meet your neighbors and have a hand in what ends up on your plate. Banquettes line the walls and there's a lengthy bar for singles and duos; all seating is situated with a counter-level charcoal barbecue carved out of the tabletop, each with its own set of controls. You order from the menu of raw ingredients --- some meats are pre-marinated, like garlicky shrimp, miso-marinated skirt steak or pesto-rubbed chicken --- and let your inner chef emerge. Like your steak rare but veggies well done? No problem. This is one kitchen that doesn't get many complaints. Beef, chicken and vegetables are cut into bite-sized pieces, better to grab with chopsticks and are eaten directly off the grill. There's also a nice selection of salads, soups and rice and noodle dishes. It takes a bit of effort to build a satisfying meal, but the cheerful staff is helpful and it's just the ticket for picky eaters, controlling types and those who enjoy a more communal dining experience.
