Hanjan Restaurant Review:

The younger, downtown sibling to chef Hooni Kim’s Danji, Flatiron favorite Hanjan has a similar design and a culinary approach to Korean cuisine that is friendlier to the western palate than the restaurants in nearby Korea Town. It’s also more elevated. Meant to evoke the food one gets at roadside stops in South Korea, Hanjan serves up a spicy array of fare not often found at restaurants on this side of the Pacific. There’s the ubiquitous bibimbap --- a potpourri of meat and rice and pickled vegetables all in one bowl --- as well as dishes like pork belly Bolognese, laced with plum sauce and chilies, tangled with wide rice noodles. Chicken nuggets, encrusted with sesame seeds, are nearly addictive and silky homemade tofu and seafood stew will appear in your dreams and you’ll wake up hungry. Beverages consist of saké and soju cocktails and selections from a globally sourced 20-bottle wine list.
