Lazy Bear Restaurant Review:

Chef David Barzelay has brought a unique vision to Lazy Bear, his bi-level restaurant in the Mission. Tickets must be purchased the month prior via their website, and seatings are at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The tasting menu is the only option available (any dietary restrictions must be relayed 48 hours in advance). The evening begins in the upstairs lounge with cocktails and small bites, surrounded by rustic, retro cabin chic décor. Then diners move downstairs to two long communal tables for the meal. Chefs emerge from the altar-like and completely open kitchen to explain each course. The experience is both exhilarating and intimate, though it can at times overshadow the food. A smoked leek custard with seaweed chips and caviar was a standout among the many well-executed reception bites. Meal highlights included a fresh and earthy artichoke dish with stinging nettle, brown butter and saba. Grilled lamb with salsify, apple and watercress was refreshingly straightforward and satisfying, while a conceptual dish of cured carrots with bone marrow took a swerve towards molecular gastronomy. Unfortunately, the seasoning in an asparagus dish was a bit unbalanced, and the kitchen vacuuming between courses felt distracting and even a bit affected. Drinks include cocktails and an extensive wine list, and the very friendly, charming staff is happy to assist with finding the right beverage option. Wine pairings are also available and worth trying, since as with everything at Lazy Bear, they aren't afraid to break a few rules to offer an exciting journey.
