Marmalade Cafe Restaurant Review:

In 1989, Selwyn Yosslowitz launched Marmalade Café in Santa Monica with Bobby and Bonnie Bums. Their eclectic concept now includes numerous cafés, perhaps none more ambitious than this branch at The Commons, a stylish open-air mall. The dining room is decorated with faux stone walls and a wraparound ledge lined with baskets and weather vanes, creating the appearance of a French farmhouse. An outdoor patio offers good people-watching. The globetrotting menu is scattershot, but offers some viable options. At breakfast, the Harbor Island incorporates three poached eggs atop crispy potato skins with Canadian bacon and asparagus. At lunch, expect a large selection of pizzas, sandwiches and salads, as well as seasonal specials like a lamb burger with lemon-rosemary aïoli. Dinner is the most eclectic meal, with items ranging from Baja cioppino to free-range chicken potpie. We recommend the simple cup of carrot-ginger soup, and find the roasted beet salad bland, though there are nice flavor bursts from crumbled blue cheese and candied walnuts. To drink, stick to the balanced wine list filled with mostly California options. For dessert, order the warm apple crisp, which hosts a streusel top and a drizzle of icing.
