Mastro's Steakhouse Restaurant Review:

Everything is done to excess at this over-the-top steakhouse in Thousand Oaks. The theme for this location seems to be "Vegas, baby," with its large photo montage of Sin City wrapping around the upper wall of the piano bar. The drinks are strong and pricey. The appetizers are too big for one person, so be sure to share. The enthusiasm of the servers is infectious, but do your best not to over-order. Some salads come in half-portions if you ask. The steaks are all first-rate cuts of meat. The bone-in versions like the veal porterhouse have the most flavor. Fish dishes are on the menu, but they are token representations, not labors of love like the meats. The seafood appetizers are really much better than the main courses, especially the oysters and the chilled shrimp cocktail. The sides aren’t memorable, despite being abundant, so resist ordering more than one. You’ll want to save room for the desserts like warm butter cake or the aptly named chocolate “sin” cake. Even more sinful: a giant bowl of freshly whipped cream accompanies desserts. The wine list gets better every year. Look for quarterly wine dinners featuring local vintners and their products.
