Nopalito Restaurant Review:

Nopalito is daring. The colorful kitchenette takes beloved Mexican cuisine (available for dollars at taco trucks and casual joints) and elevates it. Tucked away in a small retail/residential complex, the restaurant's charm lies in its homey feel. Sip a Tecate in the glassed-in patio outfitted with lots of heat lamps to account for San Francisco’s fickle weather. Or get cozy inside near the open kitchen. Must-haves on the menu include turkey meatballs served with charred japones chilies, tomatillo, plenty of garlic and hard-boiled egg crumbled on top. Tamales might be more familiar terrain for diners, but here they never fail to surprise, such as with one filled with chicken, chilies, tomato, chocolate, cilantro and lime. We also recommend the mole poblano con pollo, the complex mole sauce featuring notes of cinnamon that shine through dark, bittersweet chocolate. For dessert, don’t miss the homemade popsicles in a wide range of exotic flavors. Reservations are not taken so expect long waits, or call 415-535-3969 to get your name on the wait list. Also located (with a garden patio) in the Inner Sunset at 1224 9th Avenue.
