Piranha Killer Sushi Restaurant Review:

With its cartoon logo, playful menu names and credo of unexpected twists, Piranha Killer Sushi aims for a balance between sophisticated and sassy. Success at multiple Forth Worth locations spurred this Austin expansion. The thing is, Austin’s inventiveness with pan-Asian fusion sets a high bar, so perhaps expectations are unfairly elevated. Regardless, Piranha Killer doesn’t live up to them. The gamut, from shrimp tempura to pad Thai to chicken teriyaki, is as okay as it is common. Crunchy chicken over Asian greens lives up to the crunchy aspect, but the Asian salad doesn’t vary from a basic “American” garden salad. The best bet is to stick with rolls and sashimi. Beyond classics is a lengthy list of signature concoctions. Combining so many ingredients in one roll often yields can’t-go-wrong results. Popular items include the Forget About It Roll (masago, scallions, shrimp tempura, ginger cream, avocado, spiced crawfish) and Dr. Fran Roll (shrimp tempura, eel, cream cheese, masago, scallions, tuna, avocado). A dinner party could focus on the quality sushi and have an enjoyable meal.
