Screen Door Restaurant Review:

Screen Door’s focus is on down-home cooking and farm-fresh organics combined in match-ups that almost always inspire a long line at this family-friendly restaurant. The signature dish is a whopping plate piled with crispy, peppery fried chicken, plus buttery mashed potatoes, collard greens and cornbread. But everything on the menu is worth trying: creamy shrimp and grits; trout pecan in butter sauce; beef brisket topped with what seems like a gallon of fried onions. The daily "local organic" list outlines seasonal vegetable specials, such as carrots with roasted poblano chiles in a cumin, cilantro and lime vinaigrette, and brioche bread pudding with squash and chard. One of the best options is the Screen Door Plate with a choice of three sides including fried catfish, jambalaya, mac 'n’ cheese or bacony greens, and the above-mentioned organics. Save room for dessert, even if it's just one bite of the banoffee pie. For drinks, there's sweet tea or Southern-infused cocktails (the Rhett Butler), a mint julep and flights of bourbon. Waits at brunch are even longer than for dinner, but the reward is a platter of three huge hunks of fried chicken and a sweet potato waffle. During summer months, a pleasant covered patio with picnic tables helps ease the overflow.
