Merotoro Restaurant Review: Merotoro is the Colonia Condesa restaurant by Gabriela Cámara and Pablo Bueno, the fun, friendly chefs behind celebrated seafood eatery Contramar. This time out, it’s more turf than surf (many ingredients arrive via special arrangement from artisanal farms throughout Mexico) but the results are equally refined and satisfying. Diners sit in a stylish “rustic-industrial” space (think hewn wood and cement floors) with its whole façade opening onto sexy Avenida Ámsterdam, one of the city’s most beautiful streets. The limited menu suggests a choice to do fewer things better, and that was certainly the case with our delicate spinach-artichoke ravioli starter; our beef short ribs were among the most tender and rich we’ve had. That said, while a much-touted organic roast chicken delivered on taste, we somehow wanted something more in so splendid a setting and amid so many other successes. For dessert, handcrafted cheeses from Baja’s Rancho Cortes are a Merotoro signature, and highly recommended. The staff will guide you on a selection from the wine list that holds a number of worthwhile Mexican labels.
